Gene Pool (2003)
Gene Pool is a piece for solo piano, inspired by reading about the science and history of the universe. A strong visual event in my head became an abstract sketch that provided the form and character of the work, while most of the material was derived from an original tune entitled “Meet Me at the Gene Pool (Shallow End)”, and is contained within the first cluster. We begin with a wide perspective of the universe, massive disturbances far in the distance, flashes through cosmic dust. Traveling forward, events speed up and perspective changes, things become more detailed and scattered in a smaller plane. Closer still, energy and matter get drawn into the centre, becoming abstracted, pure, spinning with more and more intensity until the system breaks, implodes and explodes, giving birth to the new seed.
